Bar & Bat Mitzvah

Bar & Bat Mitzvah

Becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah is a journey for the child and his or her family, through which the youth take their place as (young) adults in the Jewish community.  Shir Tikvah takes this process very seriously, as do the students and their families.

The commitment to Jewish life and meaningful preparation begin with an educational program in which children learn Hebrew, either through our Wednesday evening Hebrew school or an equivalent program such as a Jewish day school. B’nei Mitzvah students also participate in Religious School on Sundays and commit to continuing their Jewish education here through Confirmation in tenth grade.

Shir Tikvah youth also participate in community experiences such as social justice actions.  It is not uncommon for our B’nei Mitzvah students to make announcements at the end of Shabbat services enlisting help for a cause.

Wendy Goldberg is the coordinator of the B'nei Mitzvah program at Shir Tikvah, as well as the music director, and guides families through the process of B’nei Mitzvah, beginning in fifth grade.  More information can be found in this B'nei Mitzvah Planning Guide, which we hope will be helpful in planning for this simcha (happy occasion). Also available is our Torah Blessings with Transliteration.
