Committees That Support and Nurture Our Congregation

Shir Tikvah is proud to be a highly participatory congregation.  Sustaining our community is a shared responsibility.

Whether we host an oneg, develop programs on a committee, or hold office on the board of trustees, each member's contribution is critical to the life of Shir Tikvah.  Below is a list of the standing committees.  Please feel free to
contact the office for more information or to join a committee or two.
Development Committee - is responsible for establishing and implementing a culture of and a commitment to giving by the members of Shir Tikvah. The Development Committee coordinates all fund raising activities of the synagogue. It also recommends fund raising policy and new initiatives to the Board. In addition to raising funds to meet our ongoing needs, this committee also takes responsibility for planned giving of funds Shir Tikvah will receive in the future. The committee needs creative thinkers who enjoy people and appreciate the importance of fundraising to keep Shir Tikvah financially healthy. Religious School Committee - oversees our Religious School and Hebrew School.  Tasks have included the creation of a Parent's Handbook for Religious School, examination of school curriculum, the running of a safe, educational Shabbat Shelanu program on Friday nights.
Youth Connections Committee - supports Shir Tikvah in reaching out to our Jewish youth and encouraging them to practice Judaism, maintain their affiliation with a synagogue and eventually raise their children as Jews.
Adult Education Committee - Plans, promotes and administers adult education classes, workshops and lectures at Shir Tikvah. The Caring Community Committee - helps congregants strengthen their connection to Shir Tikvah and to each other. We work Yad B'Yad (Hebrew for “hand in hand”) to help meet the needs of our congregants and to offer ongoing support.

Yad B’Yad welcomes congregants to participate on the committee which meets 4-6 times a year to evaluate existing activities and initiate those activities that ensure the needs of all congregants are being met.

All congregants are invited to participate at any time, or maybe sometime or just one time in any of the Yad B’Yad activities.

Yad B’Yad Activities include:
  • Meals: Cook or deliver meals and/or send cards/notes to congregants after surgery or during an illness.
  • Bikur Cholim: visit congregants who are home from the hospital or ill for short or long periods of time.
  • Shiva: assist at a Shiva to support the grieving family by taking care of all duties so the family can be with and be supported by the persons who come to the Shiva.
  • Kesher: create and/or coordinate various social activities that enrich our spiritual community life such as the Shabbat picnic, camping trip, Nesters group, Satellite dinners and much more.
  • Rides: provide congregants rides to services when needed.
  • Koleil (inclusion): helps to make Shir Tikvah welcoming, accessible and comfortable for all people with disabilities.
  • The Chavurah Coordinator assists congregants in learning more about chavurah and/or in joining a chavurah.
Finance & Administration Committee - ensures the financial well-being of the congregation and develops the budget. The committee learns about all the activities of the congregation and helps to assure appropriate and balanced funding.
Library Committee - ensures that our Library contains current materials available for check out by both members and non-members, develops cataloguing, conducts follow-up with overdue books, and keeps our library looking beautiful.
Membership Committee - is responsible for overseeing the membership process, welcoming new members and responding to membership inquiries. You must be a member of Shir Tikvah for one year before joining this committee.
T'filah ("Prayer") Committee - is responsible, with the Rabbi, for the ongoing vibrancy of our worship services.  Tasks have included the creation of prayerbooks, creative services, the Passover Haggadah, a congregational kashrut policy, a yearly ritual calendar, coordinating volunteers to host our Oneg Shabbat tables, and working as Shammas to help with service set-up.

Social Justice Committee - Our mission statement reflects our interest in human rights and social justice," said a member of the social action committee. "We will become involved in some projects as a community, but we are also looking for ways to support the work of individual members of our congregation who are active in a number of issues."
