Shir Tikvah, “Song of Hope”, can trace its beginnings to a meeting of six people at a St. Paul restaurant in February 1988. This small group shared a common vision: a new synagogue in the spirit of liberal Judaism that would welcome and encourage the participation of individuals and families of varying Jewish lifestyles. They envisioned a synagogue that was personal, welcoming and active in Torah study and social action.
Shir Tikvah is a kehllah kedosha (holy community) joyfully revealing the intersections of talmud torah (lifelong Torah study), t’filah (prayer), tzedakah (justice), and hachnasat orchim (radical hospitality). We creatively wrestle with tradition and innovation as we invigorate Jewish spiritual life and transform the world.
In the words of members:
This is the spirt of Shir Tikvah we will bring into the future. The congregation was founded on the values of inclusion and open discussion – by radicals who questioned authority and still do. We are compelled to bring many who have been on the fringe of Jewish communal life into the center. Our unique congregational style isn’t for everyone, but we remain open to everyone.
Shir Tikvah is your community for study, observance, communal activities, and social justice. The synagogue reaches out and provides a point of engagement for the breadth of diversity that is Am Israel (the Jewish people).
